Yun Jeong-In

Kim Young-Keun
Abstract
This study was designed to explore the experiences of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. In this study, the phenomenological approach, using Colaizzi¡¯s strategy was adopted to analyze in-depth interviews with six mothers. By analyzing meaningful units from the interviews, we built a basis for understanding the anxiety, and the physical and mental burden experienced by these mothers, based on each mother¡¯s stage of acceptance of her child¡¯s disability. We found that the mothers interviewed experienced anxiety throughout pregnancy and childbirth, and while raising their children. They also experienced stress associated with stereotypes and judgment from family members and others. However, we also found that the power of the maternal role, as well as unconditional love from family members, played a significant role in these women¡¯s ability to overcome stress, accept their children's disabilities, and approach their lives with a positive attitude.
